Kathleen's Community for Life
When Kathleen Franck first toured Western Home Communities, she expected to find a comfortable place to live. She patiently waited for just the right villa to become available. What she didn't expect was to find a community that would one day carry her through one of life's most difficult chapters.
It started with a sharp pain on a Friday evening. A neighbor’s knock. A trip to the ER. What followed was a cascade of complications. Kathleen spent days in the hospital, with only fragments of memory from her time in the ICU. It was a crisis no one saw coming. “I was totally incapacitated,” she recalls. “I couldn’t lift my leg off the bed. I couldn’t go to the bathroom alone. I was so weak.” But while her memory of those days is blurred, the support she received is unforgettable.
She had signed up for the Fortified Life program the very same day she saw the presentation—drawn to the promise of independence, reassurance, and a safety net she hoped she’d never need.
Years later, as her world had turned upside down, that safety net became the reason she could return home, regain her strength and reclaim her life.
Because Kathleen was a Fortified Life member, her Lifestyle Coach, Megan Grimm, was notified immediately. Even while Kathleen was sedated, Megan checked in, coordinated care and prepared for next steps, ensuring nothing fell through the cracks.
Megan describes the mission of Fortified Life simply: “We empower our members to age independently and confidently, wherever they call home.” A proactive philosophy that is personal and human.
“With Fortified Life, I felt reassured and supported.”
Unlike traditional senior living or home care models, Fortified Life pairs each member with a dedicated lifestyle coach who serves as a consistent advocate, understanding their goals, health, and story. “Our approach is proactive,” Megan explains. “We build relationships long before a crisis happens. That trust allows us to step in quickly and confidently when health changes occur.”
The first meeting with a new member is never rushed. It’s a conversation, an assessment, and the beginning of a partnership. Coaches look at the full picture—physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual wellness—to create a personalized plan that supports independence and quality of life. “We meet members where they are,” Megan says. “We respect their comfort levels, especially with change or technology. Trust is built through consistency and honesty.”
When Kathleen stabilized enough to leave the hospital, Fortified Life had already arranged her next step: two weeks at Deery Suites for physical and occupational therapy. No scrambling. No uncertainty. No fear of being alone. Fortified Life provides a circle of care during uncertain times.
Kathleen shares, “With Fortified Life, I felt reassured and supported from the time I was transferred from two weeks at Allen Hospital following surgery to Deery Suites for two weeks, and then home. After going home, many caregivers were provided until I felt comfortable being alone. They helped with meals, grocery shopping, laundry, and personal care.” Fortified Life also coordinated home nursing care and physical therapy for four weeks and provided equipment, including a walker, a cane, a shower chair, and grab bars. Kathleen expressed gratitude for transportation to off-campus doctor appointments and the Allen Wound Center, noting that “The drivers were all very caring and made sure I got to the proper office.”
When she couldn’t cook, Western Home meals arrived three times a week—something she still enjoys today. Kathleen speaks of Megan with deep gratitude, a coach who never left her side. Kathleen shares, “I’m especially thankful for my lifestyle coach, Megan Grimm. She checked on me frequently, was always there for me, and followed up when I needed anything. Without nearby family, Fortified Life provided the help I needed at a very difficult time.”
For Megan, this is exactly what the program is designed to do. “We want members to feel seen, supported, and empowered,” she says. “Aging doesn’t have to mean losing independence. With the right support system, people can continue to live fulfilling, connected lives.”
Kathleen’s recovery wasn’t shaped solely by medical care. It was shaped by neighbors who refused to let her face hardship alone. “They checked on me constantly,” she says. “They brought my mail. They took me to the ER. They came back after their volleyball game just to make sure I was okay.”
Throughout the Western Home campus in Cedar Falls, residents in the villas and townhomes organize by street for get-togethers and socialization. Her neighbors have become a close-knit group that gathers monthly. They celebrate together, and when needed, carry one another through the hardest seasons. “Each street thinks they’re the best street,” she laughs. “But mine really is.”
Today, Kathleen is thriving, reclaiming strength and life through activity. She attends physical therapy twice a week at the Wellness Center and is preparing to transition to independent workouts using machines calibrated to her watch. She plays Bean Bag Baseball, attends Bible study, lunches with the WoW group, and travels whenever she can, most recently to Norway, where she photographed puffins in their natural habitat. “I’m very busy,” she says. “I’m active. I’m living.”
Megan sees this kind of transformation often. “Every member’s journey is unique,” she says. “But over time, we see increased engagement, stronger social connections, and renewed confidence. We celebrate every milestone, big or small.”
As more people express the desire to age in place, Megan believes Fortified Life will continue to grow. “We’re uniquely positioned to meet that need. Our relationship-driven model gives members the tools and support to thrive safely and confidently in the place they call home.”
For Kathleen, that promise has already been fulfilled. “It gave me peace of mind,” she says. “I knew if something happened, everything would kick in. And it did. Better than I ever imagined.”
Her story is a testament to what aging can look like when support is proactive, coordinated, and rooted in genuine human connection. It is what Fortified Life was designed for. Western Home Communities is a community for life that feels like family and has allowed Kathleen not just to survive, but to thrive.
